Alex Oneill: We have to give everything in every single game

Leicester City Women’s Reserves have to give everything in training and in games according to defender Alex Oneill if they are to take anything away from their impressive start to the season.

  • The defender has featured ten times for the Reserves side so far this season,
  • The youngster netted the winning penalty during the shootout victory over Loughborough Foxes
  • Leah Grant’s side are currently on a seventeen-match unbeaten run since the final game of last season

Fresh from beaten Loughborough Foxes on penalties in the Quarter Finals of the Leicestershire FA County Cup in mid-January, Leah Grant’s Reserves continued their impressive league form last Sunday with a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion.

Defender Alex Oneill spoke to LCWFC TV following their cup victory over Loughborough Foxes about their progress this season and their aims for the remainder of the season.

“I’m very pleased with the win, all of the girls put in 100% effort and we left everything out there on the pitch. I think we fully deserved the win.

“Scoring the winning penalty was amazing, I have never felt something like that in my life. It was an incredible feeling, the best feeling I’ve ever had in all my footballing career in fact.”

The defender’s winning penalty was the eighteenth taken in the shootout and secured a 6-5 win for Leah Grant’s side but came with plenty of pressure for Oneill after the Foxes had already missed a chance to win the shootout.

“Before taking the penalty I was really nervous. I stayed calm so I didn’t panic and could focus. I picked the ball up, picked a spot and stuck with it.”

With the side into a second Semi-Final of the year, and a tough FA WSL Academy Cup tie against Arsenal on the horizon, the youngster knows that the squad will have to be at their best over the remainder of the season.

“We have to give everything that we have in every single game and training. We have to put in 100% effort, we want to get as far as we can as a team.

“We’ve had some really tough games, it’s important that we grind out the results as a team. We all know the importance of these tight games.

“Everyone has the same aims and we all graft for each other.”
