Leicester City Women 0 – Everton Ladies 3

FA Women’s Cup Fifth Round.

The Foxes impressive run in this season’s prestigious competition came to an end against Everton at Blaby Scouts HQ in front of over 300 people.

The hosts battled hard throughout against a side two divisions above them and more than held their own for long periods of the contest.

The game began at a furious pace with the visitors’ Jody Handley causing problems down the right flank, but City’s defence stood firm. Goalkeeper Laura Niblett was also in fine form, while at the other end Rachel Williams tried her luck from distance but Danielle Hill in the visitor’s goal was equal to the task.

Everton’s Jill Scott rattled the crossbar from 35-yards before Lauren Impey cleared the rebound. Play was held up after England Under-19 star Fern Whelan received lengthy treatment before being taken to hospital.

But her side did go one up when Jody Handley headed home from a corner just before half-time.

City remained on the back foot after the break and Everton doubled their advantage when Scott slid in at the back post to score.

With 20 minutes remaining, Zira Handley and Natasha Meade both created half chances for the Foxes but Jody Handley sealed the game when she again netted from a corner to make it three.

But despite the result, manager Rehanne Skinner was pleased with her players’ effort and said “We showed tremendous character and did ourselves proud against a team two divisions higher in the pyramid. The girls will learn a lot from this experience.”
