Cossens: Let’s build momentum for the season

Leicester City Women kick off the 2-18/19 League Campaign on Sunday and First Team Coach Shauna Cossens is hoping the team can start positively and build momentum for the season.

– Leicester City Women travel to Crystal Palace Ladies on Sunday 9 September for the opening game of the FA Women’s Championship season
– Shauna Cossens has joined Jonathan Morgan’s coaching staff for the season as she continues to recover from an injury suffered last season
– The Foxes have picked up two points from their opening two Continental Cup matches this season before the league season campaign gets underway on Sunday

First Team Coach Shauna Cossens is looking forward to the start of the 2018/19 season on Sunday after an extended pre-season and tough Continental Cup matches against a number of Women’s Super League sides.

“I believe the preparation has been fantastic, the intensity and quality of training has been impressive, the players are absorbing tactical information well and adapting their own playing styles to meet our philosophy exceptionally. There is a buzz around the team, they seem confident and ready.”

“Playing Women’s Super League Sides had really tested the squad. These teams have provided motivation and highlighted areas we need to work on to reach that next level. In particular, the squad have taken a huge amount of confidence away from the Manchester City game as we were able to hold them to 0-0 for a large amount of the game.”

Sunday’s match will be the first meeting between the two sides with both sides accepting positions into the newly re-branded FA Women’s Championship for the upcoming season, Shauna is expecting a tough match-up against the Eagles with both sides having worked hard to strengthen their squads over a busy summer.

The Foxes in training this week

“Preparation is more difficult when you haven’t played a team before. However, with the step up to the Championship, teams have made signings and managerial personnel has changed. It would be naïve of us to expect teams to play the way they have done previously.”

Crystal Palace have started the season well with victories over both Tottenham Hotspur – on penalties – and Yeovil Town in the Continental Cup, but Shauna Cossens is focussed on a good performance and starting the season with three points.

“We are a team that want to play a specific way, as a result the emphasis is more on our own performance rather than the opposition. It is vital we perform well on Sunday and come home with three points. If we can start the campaign well we believe we can build momentum throughout the season and challenge for the title.”
