  • 16-year-old Tara Kirk was called up to the Republic of Ireland Under 16s side in 2018.
  • Goalkeeper Taylor Charlton was named on the substitutes bench for the FA Women’s Championship match against Sheffield United recently.

Tara Kirk and Taylor Charlton have become the first two players to step up from Leicester City Women’s Development Centre to play for Leicester City Women’s First Team.

Promising young striker, Tara Kirk, has been with the Club since the age of 14 and recently appeared for Jonathan Morgan’s First Team in a friendly against Reading, coming off the bench for the final 25 minutes.

Having made her first appearance for the Foxes First Team, Tara Kirk spoke to LCWFC TV,

“Playing my first game against a Women’s Super League side on Sunday, it was a great opportunity. I was very happy to have been called up and it allows me to see the bigger picture of football.”

“Since joining the Development Centre two-years-ago, I am pleased with the progress I’ve made to the point where I have made an appearance for the First Team.”

“I like the fact that Leicester City are strongly into the idea of developing your players like myself and for the main aim to be to reach the First Team. It was such a great experience for me and will help with my development playing for the Republic of Ireland too.”

The two have featured heavily for Leicester City Women’s Under 18s this season, helping the side into second in the Central Warwickshire Under 18 Premier Division with just one defeat from their 17 matches so far. The young Irish forward has made 16 appearances with an impressive return of 35 goals whilst Taylor Charlton has kept 5 clean sheets in her 12 appearances for the side.

Goalkeeper Taylor Charlton has been training with the First Team goalkeepers throughout the season and was named on the substitutes bench for the FA Women’s Championship match against Sheffield United at Farley Way Stadium.

The 17-year-old ‘keeper was delighted to have made her first appearance for the Foxes First Team and is looking forward to pressing for her competitive debut. “The Club is really good at giving younger players the opportunity to train and play with the senior teams, it develops confidence and expands experience.”

“I really enjoy being with the First Team, I’ve training with the other goalkeepers throughout the season and have now developed to be a part of the First Team set-up. The team spirit is great and the amount of support you get from all the coaches.”

Leicester City Women Manager Jonathan Morgan has always looked to promote young players with nearly three quarters of this season’s squad aged 21 or under.

Speaking to LCWFC TV, the First Team Manager said: “Watching both Tara and Taylor making their first appearance for the First Team fills myself and the Club with immense pride.”

“I have watched them develop over the last two or three years in our Development Centre and we are thrilled to see them step up in to the senior section.”

“To make your first appearance against a WSL side in Reading is no mean feat at all. It shows our continued philosophy of producing and pushing youngsters in to senior football.”
