Leicester City v Birmingham City Women

Leicester City Women fell to a heavy defeat against Super League side Birmingham City on Wednesday night as the Foxes slim qualification chances were ended.

The Blues made the perfect start to the game as Lucy Quinn pounced on a scuffed clearance to run through on goal. City keeper Charlotte Clarke denied her at the first attempt, but Shania Hayles was perfectly placed to slot home the rebound.

Despite the Foxes growing back into the game after conceding early, it was Lucy Staniforth who doubled the lead for the visitors shortly after the half-hour mark. A ball over the top saw her round Clarke and finish from a tight angle.

Scotland international Chloe Arthur added Birmingham’s third of the evening, a long range effort which curled away from Charlotte Clarke and nestled into the top corner. A swift attack shortly before half time allowed Charlie Wellings to fire home for Birmingham’s fourth before the break.

Jonathan Morgan’s side looked more composed in the second half and looked threatening going forward but the WSL sides defence held firm to keep the clean sheet including two further goals in the second half, Charlotte Clarke pulled off a good save from Lucy Staniforth’s free kick but Shania Hayles poked home from the resulting corner.

The final goal of the evening came to defenced Aoife Mannion who sent Clarke the wrong way from the penalty spot to net the sixth goal.
