Leicester City v Charlton Athletic Women

Leicester City Women missed out on the chance to close in on the top four as Charlton Athletic enjoyed a dominant afternoon at Farley Way Stadium.

Jonathan Morgan made just one change to the side which beat Durham last week, with midfielder Mai Moncaster coming in for her first start of the season, to replace Nicole Nymoen.

The Foxes looked lively as the game kicked off, with one of their best chances coming in the opening 90 seconds, as Rosie Axten fired a dangerous free-kick goal bound but the Charlton keeper Katie Startup managed to get a fingertip to it to tip it over the bar.

The visitors took little time to settle into the game after that with striker Liz Ejupi testing Demi Lambourne from close range. It took just ten minutes of the game for the opening goal, as Liz Ejupi pulled the Leicester defence out wide before teeing the ball back into the centre of the box for Lily Agg to half-volley the ball back across goal and into the corner of the net.

Leicester City grew back into the game having fallen behind and could have equalised seven minutes later when Sophie Domingo was played through the defence but she couldn’t beat Startup to the ball on the edge of the area.

Six minutes from the break Lambourne was again called into action, tipping a long range effort from Agg around the post but the resulting corner led to Charlton’s second of the afternoon as the Foxes failed to clear the danger and Ejupi poked the ball home from the back post.

Two changes at the break saw Freda Ayisi and Nicole Nymoen enter the side as Jonathan Morgan’s side looked to get back into the game but a 90 second spell just five minutes into the second half saw Charlton double their lead and seal all three points.

Ejupi scored her second of the game in the 49th minute, sliding the ball home after a low drilled cross into the box from Charlotte Gurr before Agg grabbed her second moments later, Amber Stobbs playing a perfectly weighted ball into the area for Agg to comfortably head into the net.

The Foxes looked to have grabbed a consolation shortly after, when Sophie Domingo tried an effort from just inside the penalty area but Startup again made a good save to palm the shot onto the crossbar before the visitors cleared the danger.

The afternoon got worse for the Foxes when Rosie Axten was forced off ten minutes from time, the forward picking up a nasty looking ankle injury being replaced by Tash Hudson with just over ten minutes to play.

Substitute Hudson created two good chances for herself after coming on, the first a fierce effort from the edge of the area which was well saved by Charlton’s keeper before Hudson then latched onto a cross from Nymoen but couldn’t get enough power behind the header to trouble Startup in the Charlton goal.

Who impressed

Centre-back Nat Johnson put in a solid performance for the Foxes on an afternoon where they struggled to get a foothold in the game. The defender put in a number of vital blocks and tackles throughout the match to prevent Charlton extending their lead earlier in the game.

Where do we stand?

The Foxes remain fifth in the FA Women’s Championship after other results went in their favour. The gap to the top four however has extended to eight points with Tottenham dropping to fourth after their heavy defeat to Durham.

Where next?

Leicester City are back at Farley Way Stadium on Wednesday evening as Super League side Birmingham City visit the Foxes in the penultimate game of the Continental Tyres League Cup group stages. The Foxes currently sit bottom of the table after the defeat to Aston Villa in September.
