Leicester City Women Football Club

Leicester City v Lewes FC Women

Leicester City Women returned to winning ways with a convincing 4-0 win over Lewes FC Women in their first game of 2019, as goals from Melissa Johnson, Fiona Worts and Lucy Johnson secured their first win in three league games.

The Foxes played high pressing football against a Lewes side, playing their first game under new Manager Fran Alonso and looking to implement his style of play. Jonathan Morgan’s side dominated the early stages and forced visiting ‘keeper Faye Baker into a number of early saves. An early flurry of corners saw the hosts with a number of chances but the visitors defended well to deny a clear opportunity.

As the visitors grew into the game, Avilla Bergin saw an effort blocked on the edge of the area by Charlotte Greengrass before Rebecca Carter was played through on goal but her lobbed effort was well held by Demi Lambourne.

Freda Ayisi pulled most of the strings in the middle of the park for Leicester City and was at the heart of the first goal, picking up the ball inside the centre circle and running down the left flank before teeing the ball up for Melissa Johnson to simply tap home, four minutes before the break.

The game was over as a contest just ten minutes into the second half as striker Fiona Worts grabbed a quick fire double with two well taken goals. The first came after some good work inside the area before Libby Smith saw her shot well blocked but the rebound fell kindly for Fiona Worts whose deflected shot looped over the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Worts’ second goal came ten minutes into the second half as the Foxes worked the ball along the edge of the 18 yard box before Smith provided the perfect lay off for her strike partner to run onto the ball and smash home.

Whilst Lewes came back into the game in the second half, City’s defence were equal to anything thrown at them as they went on to record only their third clean sheet of the season. Avilla Bergin again went closest for the visitors late on as she saw an effort crash off the underside of the bar before being cleared to safety.

The moment of the game came just two minutes from time as Lucy Johnson grabbed her first senior goal of her career, on her 17 birthday. The youngster finished off a flowing move by rifling the ball home from just inside the area to net the perfect birthday present.

Who impressed?

Fiona Worts dominated the opening stages of the match, forcing Lewes ‘keeper Faye Baker into  a number of good saves early on before getting her reward early in the second half with two well taken goals to secure the points. The striker led the line well in a front three, closing down quickly as the Foxes looked to keep the visitors penned into their half.

Where do we stand?

The Foxes climbed back up to fifth in the Championship table following their victory over Lewes. London Bees’ defeat to Manchester United saw the Foxes climb above them.

Where next?

Jonathan Morgan’s side are back at Farley Way Stadium next Sunday as bottom side Millwall Lionesses make the trip. The two sides met for their first league meeting back in October with two Rosie Axten goals seeing the Foxes come from behind to earn all three points.
