Recap

Leicester City Women crashed out of the SSE Women’s FA Cup after a 2-0 home defeat against London Bees.

Despite starting the match in much stronger fashion, Leicester fell behind after just eight minutes when they failed to deal with a free-kick which Bees captain Katie Wilkinson headed into the bottom corner.

Leicester City then had to survive further pressure, where they escaped another scare from another free-kick not dealt with, the ball eventually cleared by the Foxes following a defensive mix up.

Jonathan Morgan’s side did nearly find a way back into the game when defender Hayley James threaded the ball through to Leigh Dugmore but the forward’s controlled shot was too tame and Sarah Quantrill collected comfortably in the visitors goal.

Rosie Axten caused some danger for the Foxes with some well taken free-kicks, the best coming just after the half hour mark when she found Libby Smith inside the area but Quantrill was quick to close her down and deny the shot.

London Bees maintained their dominance in the first half and twice nearly doubled their lead in added time at the end of the first half. Early into stoppage time, London Bees struck the inside of the post from distance, with the ball somehow not finding the back of the net. The Bees then missed an open goal with Foxes Captain Holly Morgan being caught in possession, but Bees winger Destiny Toussaint couldn’t find the back of the net with nothing in her way.

As was the same in the first half, the Foxes began the second half the better team, but were unfortunate to find themselves 2-0 down when Ruesha Littlejohn volleyed home from close range, and that all but settled the match for Leicester.

Leicester City looked to have found a way back into the game when they were awarded a penalty for handball inside the six-yard box, but Rosie Axten struck the base of the post and the ball didn’t find its way into the back of the net, leaving the Foxes still trailing 2-0.

The Foxes were unable to forge any further chances with the match petering out into a disappointing 2-0 defeat for Leicester City Women.

Who Impressed?

City defender Hayley James impressed for the Foxes on her first start since returning from injury. The full-back managed 20 minutes off the bench against Aston Villa last weekend and was rewarded with a full 90 minutes in the FA Cup. Hayley was a constant threat on the right and side of attack for the Foxes and provided key balls for close chances for both Leigh Dugmore and Rosie Axten.

Where next?

Leicester City Women face Crystal Palace Ladies next back home at Farley Way on Sunday 10 February, at 2pm.

Palace currently sit 10th in the league with just seven points from 14 games. The Foxes currently sit 6th position, having slipped below London Bees in the Championship following City’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa last time out. London Bees match against league leaders Tottenham Hotspur is the only other Championship match to take place this weekend due to FA Cup fixtures.
