Leicester City v London Bees

Leicester City recorded their first win in three weeks with a 4-2 victory over London Bees at Farley Way Stadium, with goals from Rosie Axten, Leigh Dugmore, Freda Ayisi and Nicole Nymoen secured the three points.

Leicester city started the game in the brighter fashion and were rewarded for their endeavours with just three minutes on the clock when Rosie Axten put the Foxes’ 1-0 up through bizarre circumstances. A ball knocked over the top saw the London Bees defence stop in preparation for for Leicester’s number 9 Melissa Johnson to be judged offside, only for Rosie Axten to ghost beyond the defensive line, take the ball round Bees’ keeper Sarah Quantrill and finish from an acute angle around two defenders.

Leicester remained firmly in control of the first half, and the afternoon got even worse for London Bees when Paula Howells collided with Leicester goalkeeper Demi Lambourne and had to be replaced due to injury after a lengthy stoppage.

Leicester took advantage of disorganisation in the Bees’ defence to double their lead on 33 minutes through a powerful strike from midfielder Freda Ayisi from 20 yards following a corner.

Leicester’s third came just seven minutes later when Melissa Johnson fed an expertly weighted ball through the London Bees’ defence to put Leigh Dugmore through on goal, who finished in professional style sliding the ball under Quantrill and into the bottom corner of the net.

London Bees’ did have some consolation, winning a penalty deep into added time in the first half when Lucy Johnson was adjudged to have handled the ball from a Bees’ freekick. Bees’ forward Ruesha Littlejohn stepped up and finished in tidy fashion, beating Demi Lambourne to her left hand side despite the keeper guessing the right way.

The second half showed clear signs of London Bees’ coming out with a point to prove, and the half was largely dominated by their attacking place and quick pressing. Leicester’s resolute second half defending was eventually broken by Ruesha Littlejohn’s second of the afternoon on 70 minutes, tapping in a good delivery to put the pressure on Leicester’s defence for the final 20 minutes.

However, Leicester were able to restore their two goal cushion through a wonderful finish from Nicole Nymoen, who struck from 20 yards, looping her shot over the keeper into the back post.

London Bees did come close to getting a third goal back when substitute Anne-Laure Davy rattled the crossbar, but the fourth goal eased the pressure on the Leicester performance and proved more than enough to clinch all three points with the final score 4-2.
