Recap

Leicester City Women fell to their third defeat in a row, away to London Bees as two second half goals helped London Bees to a 2-1 win.

The Foxes started the brighter of the two teams, creating numerous opportunities, with Libby Smith striking the crossbar on her first league start for the club inside ten minutes and having a one-on-one denied by the Bees goalkeeper, Sarah Quantrill.

It was Melissa Johnson who scored the breakthrough goal for Leicester City, curling her strike into the top corner from just inside the box to give Leicester City the lead.

City continued in good spirit after the goal, creating more opportunities to extend their lead with Ella Franklin-Fraiture firing just wide with a powerful shot across goal and Sophie Domingo forcing keeper Quantrill into making a good low stop. However, Leicester couldn’t add to their lead, ending a positive half with a 1-0 lead.

A half time change for London Bees changed the emphasis of the game, with Rachael Unitt replacing Anne-Laure Davy to sure up the defence and not afford Leicester so much space.

The Bees found their equaliser courtesy of a hopeful effort from captain Emma Beckett. The midfielder picked up the ball and struck high from 25-yards, beating Leicester keeper Demi Lambourne to draw the home side back level.

Despite London Bees gaining the momentum after their goal, Leicester’s forward Smith was once again denied one-on-one by Bees keeper Quantrill, and then had a further one on one saved only by a last gasp challenge from the Bees defence.

It was the hosts who managed to find the all-important second goal though, with Bees forward Katie Wilkinson managing to fire home after a low drilled delivery from the edge of the box.

Changes for Leicester City Women did cause London Bees some problems during the final twenty minutes, with Freda Ayisi making some mazy runs across the midfield, and Leigh Dugmore having an effort blocked on the edge of the box. However, the Foxes couldn’t find an equaliser and succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, one which sees London Bees climb above the Foxes in the league table.

Who impressed?

Youngster Libby Smith impressed on her first league start for the Foxes, hitting the crossbar with a powerful effort early in the first half before having a one-on-one well saved by the goalkeeper. Smith was on the right end of most of Leicester’s attacks and could have scored her first City goal but for a smart tackle on the edge of the area.

Where do we stand?

With victory, London Bees jumped above Leicester City Women, leaving the Foxes sixth. with January matches against Lewes, Millwall and Aston Villa, Jonathan Morgan’s side will need to get back to winning ways to avoid getting sucked into a battle to avoid the bottom of the table.

Where next?
