Franklin-Fraiture: I’m happy to finally be back on the pitch

Summer signing Ella Franklin-Fraiture has endured a tough start to life at Leicester City Women but the defender is happy to have put her injury behind her having completed her first 90 minutes in the win over Durham.

  • Ella Franklin-Fraiture was one of the first signings made by Jonathan Morgan over a busy summer transfer window
  • The defender suffered a broken collarbone in a pre-season match against Birmingham City
  • Having made her return from injury against Sheffield United, Ella played all 90 minutes in the win over Durham

Defender Ella Franklin-Fraiture arrived from Oxford United during a busy summer for the Foxes as they made 13 new signings in preparations for their first campaign in the FA Women’s Championship. The youngster spent nearly 10 years with Oxford United before joining Jonathan Morgan’s side.

Starting to build a strong partnership with Leicester City Women captain Holly Morgan and goalkeeper Demi Lambourne, Franklin-Fraiture was one of the stand out performers in pre-season looking comfortable at the back as the Foxes took on a number of Super League opposition to prepare themselves. Unfortunately, the defender broke her collarbone after an awkward fall in a pre-season match against Birmingham City just two weeks before the season started.

The injury kept Ella out of action for most of the first half of the season before making her league debut for Leicester City Women from the bench in the 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United before making her first start and playing all 90 minutes in the 2-0 victory over Durham Women.

“It felt so good to finally be back out on the pitch with the team. Having played in pre-season, I couldn’t wait to play a league game and get my season started. It makes it even better that we came away with three points and a clean sheet!” Franklin-Fraiture told LCWFC TV.

“Breaking my collarbone has been the biggest injury i’ve faced so far, so I haven’t been used to being out for a long period of time. Seeing everyone else play was difficult, especially because I just signed for Leicester, but the Coaches and players have been great. Although I enjoyed supporting the team, I’m just really happy to be finally back out on the pitch.”

Franklin-Fraiture played an inch perfect cross to set up Nicole Nymoen for the visitor’s first goal of the afternoon and the youngster is hoping to be able to contribute with more assists as the season continues.

“I’m so happy with how Sunday went, not just for myself but for the team. Beating Durham 2-0 and to get an assist, I couldn’t be happier. I am an attacking fullback so hopefully I’ll be able to contribute a lot going forwards this season.”

Having spent her youth with Oxford United, the summer move to Leicester City was her first change of Club and whilst the injury was a set-back, Ella Franklin-Fraiture feels she has settled in well with her new team-mates and hopes the team can push on from the victory over Durham.

“I’ve settled really well at Leicester. Although the injury has been frustrating, I’ve really enjoyed being part of a new team. We had a really good weekend away together in Durham, so hopefully after the great result we can push on for the rest of the season”
