Melissa Johnson signs for Leicester City Women

Leicester City Women Football Club have bolstered their attacking ranks with the signing of exciting striker Melissa Johnson ahead of the 2018/19 FA Women’s Championship season.

  • Melissa Johnson arrives at Leicester City having left Sheffield FC Ladies at the end of the 2017/18 season.
  • The striker enjoyed a five-year spell with Derby County Ladies in the FA Women’s Premier League.
  • The 26-year-old was twice selected as The FA WSL 2 Player of the Month for January and May 2018.

The 26-year-old joins the Foxes having scored 17 goals in 20 games in WSL 2 for Sheffield FC Ladies last term and becomes City Manager Jonathan Morgan’s first signing of the summer.

Johnson has signed an initial one-year contract with Leicester City Women having spent the 2017/18 season with Sheffield FC Ladies. Her impressive displays for the Yorkshire side included a hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur Ladies in January that saw her named FA WSL 2 Player of the Month.

Speaking to LCWFC TV, Johnson said: “I’m very happy to be here at Leicester City Women, the Club have some great players going into next season! I’ve got a good feeling about this ambitious Club and I’m excited to be part of it.”

Leicester City Women Manager Jonathan Morgan said: “I’m delighted to capture Melissa, she was one of the top goalscorer’s in the Women’s Championship last season and is an excellent finisher.

”We’ve been trying to bring Mel to the Club over the past three seasons and I’m pleased that we have finally got her in and it coincides with an exciting time for us.”

The pacy striker joined Sheffield FC Ladies after a long spell with Derby County Ladies that began when she was just 19. She netted 72 goals for the FA Women’s National League side, including a strike against Leicester City Women during the Foxes’ 3-1 victory in Derby in April 2017.

Over the past three seasons with both Derby County Ladies and Sheffield FC Ladies, Johnson has found the net 60 times and will be looking to pick up where she left off when she links up with her new team-mates when the Foxes campaign kicks off later this week.
