Reserves Review: Derby Cup Defeat

Leicester City Women Reserves were unfortunately knocked out of the FA Reserves Cup on Sunday as they fell in the third round, 2-1 to Derby County.

The Foxes took the lead at Mickleover Sports as Shannon Henson’s cross was turned into the net by a Derby County defender, the lead however was short-lived as Derby equalised just minutes later heading home from a corner.

On the half-hour mark, Derby took the lead as a cross into the Leicester box went unchallenged and the Rams headed into the break 2-1 up. The Foxes created some good chances in the second half and were unfortunate not to find an equaliser to send the game into extra time.

LCWFC Reserve Assistant Manager Nick Boyer was pleased with how the side responded in the 2nd half;

We had a difficult first half, we were caught out of shape and left a few crosses uncontested. Credit to Derby County, they were ready from the start and took advantage of our mistakes. Our girls responded well and were much more connected in the 2nd half.

Leah Grant’s side had reached the 3rd round of the competition after a 7-1 win away to Burton Albion in the 1st round before receiving a bye to the 3rd round. LCWFC ‘Keeper Serena Clarke echoed Nick’s thoughts;

Yesterday just wasn’t our day. We created chances and just couldn’t finish them, fair play to Derby County, they came and outplayed us in the 1st half. They didn’t want to be defeated 4-0 again, and they took their chances.

However, in the 2nd half we came out and battled, but it wasn’t enough and the clock ran down before we could equalise. We’ll go again next week against Derby in a league fixture and we’ll prove that we are title contenders and hopefully take the 3 points.

Leicester return to league action next week as they look to reclaim top-spot back from Coventry United, the Foxes face a tough trip back to Mickleover Sports to face Derby County again with Nick Boyer believing that the squad can bounce back from their cup defeat;

I have the utmost confidence in this group, we will bounce back and have more to show Derby next week.
