Two youngsters signed from Leicester City Regional Talent Centre

Leicester City Women have added two promising youngsters from Leicester City’s RTC to their squad for the 2018/19 season as both Lucy Johnson and Freya Thomas join the Club.

  • Defender Lucy Johnson and Midfielder Freya Thomas both graduated from the Regional Talent Centre in 2018
  • The Under-16’s reached the Semi-Finals of the FA Girls U16 Youth Cup last season
  • Both players are named in Jonathan Morgan’s 23-player squad for the Foxes’ inaugural FA Women’s Championship campaign

Leicester City Women is delighted to have signed two RTC graduates for the 2018/19 season with Lucy Johnson and Freya Thomas both committing to the Club.

Defender Lucy Johnson made 20 appearances for Leicester City RTC’s Under-16’s last season scoring nine goals, including the opening goal in their quarter-final victory over Bristol City in the FA Girls’ U16 Youth Cup.

Speaking to LCWFC TV, Lucy Johnson said: “I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to be involved with the first team at the age of 16, but the hard work certainly doesn’t stop now.

I expect us as Leicester City, with the quality and depth in the squad that we’ve got, to be able to compete with the best teams in this league. Joining Leicester was undoubtedly the right decision for me to make as I feel it is a club that will help me to progress into a better all-round player.”

Midfielder Freya Thomas scored nine times for the Under-16’s last season from 21 appearances helping the Foxes’ to a second-place league finish behind Arsenal Under-16’s.

Freya Thomas said: “I’m looking forward to my first season in women’s football with this exciting Club, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for myself.

This season I hope to gain a lot of experience to progress my career further. With the strong set-up at Leicester City and the quality of the current players, the standards set are high and I look forward to the challenges ahead.”

Leicester City Women Manager Jonathan Morgan said: “Lucy and Freya have both hugely impressed us since coming through to the senior set-up. We were already aware of Lucy and it’s great to have a natural left footed player. She is mature beyond her age and has settled in very nicely.

Freya has come as a surprise to us. We did not know too much about her but she has impressed from the moment she started training with us and will certainly be adding a lot to our squad.

It’s great that two 16-year olds have made the jump up so early in their careers and testament must go to Leicester City’s Regional Talent Centre for producing some strong talent.”

The two 16-year-olds will be looking for their first taste of senior football on Sunday when Leicester City Women kick off the 2018/19 season at home to Bristol City Women in the Continental Tyres League Cup.
