Libby Smith signs for Leicester City Women

Leicester City Women Football Club have added to their attacking ranks, signing former Leicester City RTC forward Libby Smith.

  • Libby Smith arrived at Leicester City towards the end of 2018, featuring in three Championship matches so far.
  • The striker joins Leicester City after a spell with Chelsea Women’s Development side in the FA WSL Academy League.
  • The 17-year-old came through the Leicester City FC Regional Talent Centre, having joined the Club aged seven.

The 17-year-old joins the Foxes from Chelsea Women’s Development side having netted three goals in three appearances for the London Club earlier this season.

Smith has also represented her country up to Under-18 level, and featured for the young lionesses as they reached fourth placed in the 2018 Women’s U17s UEFA Championships. The forward becomes City Manager Jonathan Morgan’s first signing of the January transfer window.

Speaking to LCWFC TV, Smith said: “I’m really happy to have signed for Leicester City, it’s exciting to be a part of this club and their ambitions. Personally, it will be a good challenge. One which will allow me to develop and test myself.”

Leicester City Women Manager Jonathan Morgan said: “We are delighted to capture Libby. She is a player who I have had numerous chats with and her parents over the past 2 years. At a young age Libby already shows pedigree and I for one am excited to help develop her for the next chapter in her career.

Libby for me sends out another strong message that we will continue to develop and give youngsters opportunities. She has been here for a few weeks now and settled in well with the girls. We have already seen examples of what a top player she can grow in to.”

The Leicester-born forward progressed through Leicester City’s Regional Talent Centre before moving to join Chelsea’s Development side in the FA WSL Academy League. The striker netted 11 goals in 17 appearances since the start of the 2017/18 season.
