Leicester City Women Football Club

The Weekend in Numbers: 28th January

After each fixture, LCWFC are taking a look through the record books to bring you stats, facts and figures from the weekend’s action.

This week, Dan Smith takes a look at LCWFC’s County Cup record as well as LCWFC Reserves their first cup final.

  • Leicester reach County Cup Final.

Leicester City Women’s 3-0 win over Loughborough Foxes on Sunday saw them reach the County Cup Final where they will meet AFC Leicester on Tuesday 10th April. The Foxes have now reached the County showpiece for the 12th time in their 14-year history.

Leicester have won the competition a record 8 times and will be looking to extend that record to 9 wins with a victory in April. Jonathan Morgan’s side has already beaten the team which has dumped them out of the competition in both of the past two seasons and will be hoping that will give the side the positive push needed to go and pick up the trophy for the first time since 2014.

Leicester reached the final of the competition last season, but an injury-hit side fell 2-1 to Loughborough Foxes.

  • This Week in History: 1st February 2009 – LCWFC 8 – 1 Rotherham

Leicester City recorded their biggest ever Northern Division win (at the time) on this day back in 2009, braces from Hannah Smith and Louise Fellows added to goals from Jade Radburn, Leah Rawle and Remi Allen before a Rotherham own goal sealed the big win.

The victory came in the middle of a 9-match unbeaten league run which included a 3-0 win away to Manchester City.

Leicester have once scored more than 8 in the Northern Division, with an 11-0 win over Rochdale Ladies coming two years later, whilst Jonathan Morgan’s side have also come close with a -2 win away at AFC Fylde earlier this season.

  • Staying strong until the final whistle

Olivia Mitcham’s header in the 87th minute against Loughborough Foxes may have just been adding gloss to an already confirmed result, but Leicester City have scored a number of important late goals already this season, including late winners against Bradford in the FA Cup and against Wolves and Stoke in the League.

Jonathan Morgan’s sides ability to put pressure on opposition defences right up until the final whistle. The club have scored 30% (18) of their total goals (58) inside the final 15 minutes and have earnt the team 6 points in the league as well as progression into the 4th Round of the FA Cup.

  • LCWFC Reserves reach first County Plate Final

Leah Grant’s side have reached the Leicestershire FA County Plate Final in the competitions first year, LCWFC Reserves recorded an impressive 12-0 victory over Cosby United with Gracie Williams netting four for the Foxes.

The Reserves will take to the pitch at Holmes Park 4 days before Jonathan Morgan’s side as they play against Loughborough Foxes Development Squad on Friday 6th April.

Goals for Leicester came from Gracie Mai Williams (4), Millie Sheard (2), Jess Seaton, Alex O’Neill, Shannon Henson, Chloe Maitland, Georgia Gibson and Olivia Perrin.
